The organometallic complex CpFe(CO)2CH3 is included in a b-cyclodextrin cavity. The electron transfer activation of the coordination sphere leads to insertion of CO in the carbon-metal bond. The reaction inside the cavity suppresses undesirable side-reactions and retains the reacting CO at the reaction site, which simplifies the complicated overall reaction mechanism of the bond-insertion.
