From July 1, 2026, we will be known as the Heyrovský Institute of the CAS

From 1 July 2026, our Institute will enter the next chapter of its history under a new name: Heyrovského ústav AV ČR, v. v. i. In English, we will use the name Heyrovský Institute of the CAS. The change is accompanied by the motto “A new name, the same ambitions”, which captures the main purpose of this step: to preserve continuity while better reflecting the institute’s current profile.

The new name reflects the breadth of research carried out at the institute today. In addition to physical chemistry, its scientific focus includes areas related to energy conversion and storage, industrial catalysis, materials research, astrobiology, quantum technologies and the development of diagnostic methods. According to the institute’s management, the current name therefore no longer fully captures the actual scope of its scientific activities.

The name of Jaroslav Heyrovský, the founder of polarography and still the only Czech Nobel laureate in the natural sciences, remains an essential part of the institute’s identity. His legacy represents an important connection to tradition, scientific courage and international prestige. At the same time, the simplified name is intended to make the institute easier to identify in both Czech and international contexts.

The Heyrovský Institute of the CAS will continue to develop excellent research based on international cooperation, support for talent and the pursuit of new knowledge relevant to energy, healthcare, the environment and other areas of contemporary society. The name change therefore does not represent a change in direction, but a clearer expression of what the institute is today and where it is heading.
